UNESA Launches the First Campus Accessibility Matrix in Indonesia, Disability Inclusion Metric
"Surabaya State University (UNESA) has developed the Unesa Disability Inclusion Metric (UDIM), a universal parameter that assesses the level of accessibility of persons with disabilities in institutions or organizations. The development of UDIM reached the focus group discussion (FGD) stage together with experts, users and partners from within and outside the country, which took place in a hybrid manner on Thursday, 16 June 2022.
Prof. Dr. Budiyanto, M.Pd., as the Head of the UNESA Center for Disability Services Studies (PSLD), explained that the discussion focused on preparing indicators. The purpose of developing this UDIM is to provide indicators that can be used as a reference in improving the quality of disability inclusion in various organizations. UDIM is expected to be an evaluation tool to measure the quality level of disability inclusion in an institution.
Prof. Budiyanto stated that UDIM received appreciation from several foreign experts, including Prof. David Evans, Professor of Special and Inclusive Education at the University of Sydney-Australia, and Prof. Kieron Sheehy, Professor of Education at The Open University. Both of them provide support for the design of UDIM indicators so that they can become a universal reference for all organizations and institutions around the world.
Dr. Sujarwanto, M.Pd., as Deputy Chancellor for Planning and Cooperation, said that the development of UDIM is part of UNESA's commitment to creating an inclusive environment for persons with disabilities, both in Indonesia and the world. UNESA has been committed to various disability empowerment efforts, including designing applications to assist the disabled workforce in finding work and developing a Signalong Indonesian sign language dictionary with foreign experts.
UDIM is the first disability inclusion metric in Indonesia and is a reference for organizations at the global level. This discussion about UDIM is part of the commemoration of UNESA's 58th Anniversary and involves various parties, including the National Committee for Disabilities, the East Java Education Office, the UB Disability Service Center, the East Java Indonesian Special Education Professional Association, as well as other partners from within and outside the country."
